A US study covered in the 2018 Consumer Electronics Guide by consumer insights company Crimson Hexagon has revealed positively trending sentiments toward smart home technology. Lighting and security being the most discussed topics, with the technology’s futuristic appeal and convenience cited as influential factors.

Voice assistants are surging in popularity as a new category. These are now being integrated with lighting control.

The Consumer Electronics Guide shows that consumers largely have an optimistic outlook on smart home technology. According to the data, the discussion surrounding smart home technology started to see a massive boost back in 2013. Social media post volume jumped from around 25,000 in 2012 to over 250,000 in 2017.

The study looked at the five main components of a smart home:

  • Lighting
  • Securuty
  • HVAC
  • Voice assistants
  • Entertainment

The researchers found that lighting and security dominated the conversation, with voice assistants seeing the most growth over the last seven years.

“Consumers are increasingly prioritising efficiency and utility over entertainment and fun for their smart homes,” the study says.

“While smart homes may have begun as intriguing baubles for techies, they have quickly been adopted by a more mainstream audience that is looking for functionality more than futurism.”
