More than beautiful: Design Plus awards

Carpet Concept Orgatec 2018

The winners of the international Design Plus competition powered by Light + Building have been announced by the competition’s jury of experts. Four pendant lights are receiving the coveted ‘Best Of’ award from Design Plus, along with a smoke detector.

The competition awards innovative products which meet the highest standards of design, ease of use, sustainability and technical quality; the jury also homed in on originality, a clear formal design language, and the ability of the products to create a particular atmosphere in a room.

Best Of winners:

Discovery Vertical 140 Artemide Deutschland GmbH (Germany), inhouse design
An unobtrusive suspended luminaire whose volume is only perceived when switched on, thanks to the light that outlines the central emitting surface. The result is a uniform light, ideal for working environments. Diameter 140mm (70 and 100mm also available). Output 6762lm, CCT 3000K
Illan Luceplan SrL (Italy), design by Zsuzsanna Horvath (Denmark)
A very light body made with extremely thin laser-cut flexible plywood; once suspended from the ceiling, Illan takes on volume thanks to the force of gravity and assumes its characteristic form that floats in the air. Skilful use of the LED source creates very comfortable, relaxing diffused lighting. Available in multiple sizes up to 1m diameter
Trypta Luceplan SrL (Italy), design by Stephen Burks (USA)
A system of suspension lamps that offers a combination of acoustic features and lighting performance in various dimensions and colours. The cylindrical aluminium body is equipped with two LED sources to provide both direct and indirect diffused light; three slots along the body of the lamp permit assembly of three soundproofing acoustic panels. By combining panels in different measures and positions, it is possible to create varied configurations
BREAK-IT Oligo Lichttechnik GmbH (Germany), inhouse design
Cylindrical luminaire design in two parts that can hang separately (vertically) or connected (horizontally). Both positions are very different both aesthetically and in terms of light quality

A total of 177 products from 126 businesses in 24 countries were submitted; of those, 34 received a Design Plus Award. They include new types of luminaires, self-illuminating glass, a wall box for charging electric cars, and invisible electric plugs.

We were also impressed by a product that didn’t make the Best Of list (it was only awarded a Winner title) – LightGlass, the first system of self-illuminating glass panels to be industrially available for the world market.

When switched off, LightGlass looks like ordinary glass; when switched on it becomes a full-surface light source, glare-free and dimmable, availanle in Brilliant White, Tunable (HCL), and Rainbow (RGB-B). More here.
